In the tuning-in process, students shared their own understanding of “belief”. Later on, after talking with parents, they all agreed that belief stood for something that one believes in and which encourages people to pursue their life goals. Students looked for information online as well where they found out that beliefs were various: there were political belief, philosophical belief, etc…
Feel Political Belief in Stories 在英雄事迹中感受政治信仰
When learning The Five Heroes on Langya Mountain, students were deeply impressed that it was the confidence in communism that gave the five heroes unlimited courage; they read the poem The Long March by Chairman Mao and were touched by the spirit of persistence and bravery of the Red Army; the joyful scene in The Founding Ceremony of the PRC instilled patriotism in students… That’s how beliefs play a significant role in the history of China. Following that, the fifth-grade held a sharing session on heroic stories.
Find Philosophical Belief in Poems 在诗歌中寻找哲学信仰
Which kind of belief has the greatest impact on Chinese people? Students found that although they grew up in different families, they had to meet similar requirements from parents, such as respecting the elders, being polite to others, respecting the national flag, etc. Why? Do Chinese people have had these ideas since ancient times? Divided into groups, students began to study some poems of Li Bai and Du Fu and to explore their beliefs.
They firstly studied five poems of Li Bai that were written at his different ages to feel the changes of his state of mind and to find the reasons behind the changes. Then students discussed three other poems of Li Bai and six poems of Dufu.
By comparing the poems of Li Bai and Du Fu written at different stages of life, G5 found that although their living time, personal experience and writing styles differed, these two poets both demonstrated their attention on personal accomplishment, family reunion and country or even world destiny.
Family and country thoughts in Li Bai and Du Fu’s poems represent one of the basic connotations of Chinese traditional culture, and are also an embodiment of the Book of Rites, one of the classics of Confucianism which is exactly a philosophical belief that has the longest and deepest influence in China. As the Book of Rites said, people should “cultivate the self, regulate the family, govern the state, then lead the world to peace”. Students started to set goals for themselves.
In this Unit, students got to understand what beliefs are and how they influence people and society.
Easter Egg 隐藏的彩蛋
A group prepared a surprise in their presentation. They adapted one Du Fu’s eight-line poem with five words into an eight-line poem with seven words and won the applause of the whole class. Students even began to write poems. Some of them adapted the original ones, and some created their own poems. Since they have never learnt eight-line poem with seven words before, they call their poems an “Easter egg”.
