From a Traditional School to an International School丨从传统学校到国际学校

It has been a semester since my daughter came to WES. She has changed a lot. I just want to write a little article to record it. Hopefully, years later, she can find this article and recall this time. I also hope to bring some valuable information to those who are still hesitant and tangled “should I send my child to the international school?” So they can consult it.

The logic of each parent’s choice for children to enter international schools may not be the same. My original logic is mainly: with the further development of the Internet the world is accelerating integration, English is becoming more and more important. In WES, she can receive nearly 10 classes by foreign teachers each week, so she can learn English easily.

Facts have proved that my original choice is not wrong.

In the previous traditional school, English is only a subject. My daughter was obviously not motivated to learn English.

In the current international school, English is a tool. If you want to understand what the foreign teachers say, you need to learn English well. If you want to make friends with foreign people, you need to learn English well. If you want to understand what the signs on the wall mean, please learn English! If you want to play a role in the music drama, you need to speak English well…….

Now her English class is taught by a native speaker, a teacher who is from the United States, Mr. DEEPAK. My daughter said that she could understand almost everything in the class. For some new words in the class, she can guess them in the context.

Though she is still at grade four, she can understand a native speaker well. Obviously, she is much stronger than her father!

Although the tuition is kind of high, deep inside, I feel “it is worth it!”

Moreover, some of the following gratifying changes have taken place in my daughter.

Change No.1: changes in school orientation

My daughter said school is her second home. In school, just like at home – she feels relaxed, comfortable, happy, willing to stay at school. She also said that the school is like a grassland, she and her classmates are a group of wild horse running freely on the prairie.

Change No.2:  the teacher team changes

In the previous traditional schools, the main sources of teachers are normal college graduates, with few foreign teachers, returnees, PhD, Master. The teacher’s knowledge structure, teaching methods are not very different.

In the current international schools, teachers have a wide range of sources; foreign teachers, returnees, Ph.D., Master accounted for a considerable proportion. The teacher’s knowledge structure is different, the teaching style is different!

Tina Yuan, the homeroom teacher of grade 4, once worked in the United States for a year. She is very patient, very popular with children.

A good teacher, a good luck!

Change No.3:  changes in diet

The ancients said, people treat food as No.1 issue. You are what you eat.

In the traditional school, lunch choice is relatively small; my daughter cannot have enough.

In the current international school, lunch is a buffet, with a lot of choices. Every day at noon she can eat well. She personally likes to eat the food with fries, fruit, bread, and hamburgers. These foods are not eaten in previous schools.

Less than a year, my daughter grew up nearly 10 cm, during which there is no cold, not into the hospital. As parents, we are pleased!

Change No.4: physical changes and team awareness to develop

In the previous traditional school, sport is a subject with less importance, and my daughter did not like sports. She rarely exercised.

In the current international school, the sport is a main subject. My daughter fell in love with exercising. Every morning, she will run three laps; no matter if it rains or shines (rainy days in the indoor gymnasium).

Physical education is very rich in content: handball, gymnastics, hockey, tee ball and so on. Through these sports, my daughter slowly realized “what is teamwork.”

Change No.5:  a stronger sense of independence, some good habits developed

My daughter lodges at the school. School baggage is basically her own clean up. Living in school at night, she arranges her own living. Independent awareness is stronger than before.

Every afternoon, four to five, self-study period, she just finishes her homework; at night, she reads what interests her, which has now developed into a habit. Good habits will affect her life.

Change No.6: the school values music, PE and art.

In the traditional school, the main subject is the “main” section, which can easily squeeze the time from other less important classes, especially when the final exams are coming. Those teachers who teach the less important class allow it happen.

In the current international school, each subject share the same importance, but the main subjects arranged a little more hours.

Daughter’s music teacher Elaine, is from South Africa; sports teacher George, is from Romania; art teacher Jaffray, is from the United States. They are very experienced teachers! Cici, another music teacher is also very popular with children. My daughter has learned some of the fragments of Peking opera from Cici. Art class often means handmade art. She likes it so much!

Change No.7:  featured courses

In the current international school, there is a UOI course from IB education, daughter is very fond of it!

About IB and UOI I am here to give a brief introduction, for more information, we can search Google.

IB is an education system ready for the students from the pre-K to the high school. Because it is not attached to the any country, in recent years it has been the global sought after education, the pursuit of parents. A large number of schools in China are actively applying for IBO’s formal authorization, parents also see IB as a synonym for excellence.

UOI (Unit of Inquiry) refers to “hyper-subject inquiry unit.” The PYP project sets six super subjects, which represent areas of human experience that are meaningful to people of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The six super subjects are: who are we, what time are we in, how we express ourselves, how the world works, how we organize ourselves and share the earth.

Change No.8:  field trip and big events in the school

In the traditional school, the opportunity to travel is less. In case going out, they go out for only a day or half a day.

In the current international school, there is a better opportunity to travel more. Last year in October they went to Jiangxi Longhu Mountain. She came back she told me, in the Longhu Mountain, she started to realize herself again.

Musicals, masks and other large-scale activities broaden their view.

Change No.9:  class size

The original class has 61 students; the current class has only 16 students.

Children grow up; the school is also growing. In March, the school formally established the International High School CWIH. There is no doubt that Wes school will become a banner of international education in Hunan!

In the right time, we met a right school. Every arrangement is the best!

We really appreciate those who helped us !

在目前的国际学校,英语是一种工具。需要听懂外教课,请学好英语! 需要结交外国朋友,请学好英语! 需要看懂墙上各种 SIGNS,请学好英语! 想要在音乐剧里扮演一个角色,请说好英语……
